Put Out All Three

So there's a nice variety

A jar of Grandpa Spencer's Hot & Spicy Mustard on a wooden board with sliced salami, cheese and apples, its lid showing the 2015 World Champion seal
Hot & Spicy on a board. That lid is the World Champion seal it won in the mustard category at the 2015 World Hot Sauce, BBQ and Extreme Foods Awards. See the awards or get a jar of Hot & Spicy.

The final step for a charcuterie board is the mustard. We make three flavors, so we put out all three and let everybody find their own match.

Each one does a different job. Horseradish goes with the roast beef and corned beef. Original Sweet & Spicy goes with the ham and the sharp cheddar. Hot & Spicy is for the summer sausage and for the guests who like a kick.

Those matches come from our own finger sandwiches, the ones we make for company, and they carry right over to a board.

What Goes With Each Jar

How we pair them

Horseradish

$9.00 for a 9oz jar

Roast beef, corned beef and Swiss. A sweet base with a mild to medium bite that won't wipe out your sinuses. Our best seller.

Original Sweet & Spicy

$9.00 for a 9oz jar

Ham, sharp cheddar and colby jack. Creamy and sweet, and the 1935 family recipe the whole business started with.

Hot & Spicy

$9.00 for a 9oz jar

Summer sausage and krakow. Hot and sweet, with about the heat of a jalapeño or cayenne pepper. Turkey and havarti go with any of the three.

Three jars of Grandpa Spencer's mustard, Hot & Spicy stacked on Original Sweet & Spicy and Horseradish, next to a charcuterie board with sliced summer sausage, cheese, pickles, olives and pretzel rods, with fruit behind; the Hot & Spicy lid shows its World Champion seal

What you need

  • Meats: ham, roast beef, corned beef, krakow, summer sausage
  • Cheeses: sharp cheddar, colby jack, Swiss, havarti
  • Crackers: woven wheat, round butter crackers or thin wheat crackers
  • Grandpa Spencer's Original Sweet & Spicy Mustard
  • Grandpa Spencer's Hot & Spicy Mustard
  • Grandpa Spencer's Horseradish Mustard
  • A large cutting board or tray

How to make it

  1. Use a large cutting board or tray so there's room for a variety of items.
  2. Lay out a selection of meats. Ham, roast beef, corned beef, krakow and summer sausage all work.
  3. Add the cheeses: a sharp cheddar, colby jack or Swiss, and havarti, which is one of my favorites.
  4. Add crackers. There are lots of choices.
  5. Finish the board with Grandpa Spencer's mustards. Put out all three flavors so there's a nice variety.

Pretzel rods standing up in a glass make a good dipper for the mustard, and they are in our own board photo above. More on mustard and pretzels. If you are making finger sandwiches for the same party, the three we make are on the sandwich page.

Common Questions

About mustard on a board

What kind of mustard goes on a charcuterie board?

More than one. We put out all three of ours: Original Sweet & Spicy, which is creamy and sweet; Hot & Spicy, which has about the heat of a jalapeño or cayenne pepper; and Horseradish, which has a sweet base and a mild to medium bite. Everybody can pick what goes with the meat and cheese in their hand.

Which mustard goes with roast beef or corned beef?

Horseradish. Roast beef, Swiss and Horseradish Mustard on pumpernickel is one of our favorite finger sandwiches, and the same match works on a board.

Which mustard goes with ham?

Original Sweet & Spicy. Ham, sharp cheddar and Original on rye is another of our finger sandwiches, and those three sit well together on a board too.

Is a spicy mustard good on a charcuterie board?

It is if some of your guests like a kick. Set Hot & Spicy next to the summer sausage or the krakow.

Are your mustards gluten free?

Yes. All three of our mustards are gluten free.
