What can I use instead of yellow mustard?
Another prepared mustard works in most recipes that call for yellow mustard. Ours are sweeter and have more going on, so start with the same amount and taste. As a binder on the smoker, Original Sweet & Spicy does the same job; our own pulled pork uses a whole jar.
What Yellow Mustard Is
The short version
Yellow mustard is the mild American mustard. It is made from white mustard seed (also called yellow mustard seed), vinegar, water and salt, with turmeric for the bright color. It tastes mild and tangy, with very little heat.
It goes on hot dogs and burgers, into potato salad and deviled eggs, and on a pork butt or ribs as a binder before the rub goes on.
What to Use Instead
Our three jars, by what you're making
None of ours is a yellow mustard. They are sweet gourmet mustards, and each one has more flavor than a plain yellow. Where a recipe calls for yellow mustard, start with the same amount of one of ours and taste.

Common Questions
About yellow mustard and what to use instead
What can I use instead of yellow mustard?
Another prepared mustard works in most recipes. Ours are sweeter and have more going on, so start with the same amount and taste. On the smoker, Original Sweet & Spicy works as a binder; our own pulled pork uses a whole jar.
What is yellow mustard made of?
White (also called yellow) mustard seed, vinegar, water, salt and turmeric, which gives it the bright color. It is the mild, tangy mustard most people grew up with.
Can I use a sweeter mustard as a binder instead of yellow mustard?
Yes. The binder is there to help the rub stick and carry flavor in. We spread a whole 9oz jar of Original Sweet & Spicy on a pork butt before the rub and smoke it about 7 or 8 hours at 225°F.
What is the difference between yellow mustard and a sweet mustard?
Yellow mustard is mild and tangy with no sweetness to speak of. A sweet mustard like our Original Sweet & Spicy is creamy and sweet with a little spice, closer to a honey mustard.
